Product Description Using an informal, conversational style, this "how to" book guides beginning students from spreadsheet basics through the robust engineering and scientific applications of EXCEL, including using EXCEL in the lab. Students learn how to compose structured, efficient, documented workbooks with data entry cells, summary results and statistics cells, and commented cells. Throughout the book, they'll find innovative techniques for composing spreadsheets, solving problems, analyzing data, and presenting results that will help them in their courses and professional careers. End-of-Chapter problems not only show how to use EXCEL, they also relate directly to topics in engineering and the sciences. Plus, a CD, which is packaged with the text, contains sample workbooks, links to online EXCEL resources, and text updates via the book's web site.

Not Worth The Paper Its Printed On October 22, 2008 Michael Levine (Santa Fe, NM) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a practicing licensed professional engineer that was looking for a book on Excel written for practicing engineers. This book's title is totally misleading. It implies that it is written for "engineers" and "scientists" not engineering and/or science students. In my opinion, this book was written for high school students. Don't waste your money on this if you're looking for a practitioners reference book. I wouldn't recommend this book to another professional engineer even if it was free. The book is also obsolete since it was written in 2003. Excel 2007 has many significant changes to the GUI (i.e., the "ribbon" interface). It's not worth your time to even browse through. This book falls very short of what the title implies. I made the classic mistake of "judging a book by its cover". I wasted my money and time on it.
The Cover Says It Is There December 19, 2002 2 out of 23 found this review helpful
The CD was missing. Since the CD is referenced throughout the book, one sort of "feels left out" after a while.
Spreadsheet experts stay in balance June 30, 2000 Dr D. Haynie (Oxford, England) 24 out of 36 found this review helpful
It is my great pleasure to comment on Van Bloch's textbook on EXCEL for engineers and scientists. His marvellous ability to communicate complicated ideas in simple terms shines through on every page. More than just useful, this book comes to market at a time when electronic spreadsheet analysis has become part and parcel of the day-to-day work of researchers in all areas of engineering and science. Simply put, spreadsheet and data manipulation skills are essential in today's world. Prof. Bloch does his reader's a great service by developing the concepts for use with EXCEL, one of the most widely used spreadsheets in the world. The CD-ROM will be especially helpful to students as they seek to master spreadsheet basics and more advanced techniques.
